EMPLOYER DESCRIPTION: This employer operates a large family pet business that deals in animal sales, animal care, animal cleaning, plus sales of associated products & services . Animals include birds, dogs, cats, fish, reptiles, rabbits, guinea pigs and rats. This business is happy to host a student who is interested in animal care but is also capable of working with customers and retail sales.
Prefer student to be undertaking VETiS in Animal Studies
Attendance Details: One week blocks only.
TASK & DUTIES: Students will be working with a broad range of animals which under-supervision must be handled and cared for and kept clean and healthy according to their species needs. Students must understand that a lot of cleaning is involved in working with animals and will be part of your daily routine. This role also required you to work in the retail side of the business.
REQUIREMENTS: The students must have a love of animals and under supervision be willing to handle reptiles, fish, birds and maintain enclosures. They must have good communication skills as you will be interacting with staff and customers at all times. Cleaning of the enclosures and store is a large part of this position.
SKILLS ATTAINED: Students will be putting in to practice elements of their VET Animal Studies program. This might include; feeding and watering animals, providing information on companion animals, products and services, assisting with animal care hygiene, maintaining strict OH&S procedures and communicating within a small team.
DRESS REQUIREMENTS: Neat and tidy. Enclosed footwear, shirts and pants, a jacket in colder weather.
FIRST DAY INSTRUCTIONS: Student needs to arrive early, ask for the manager, and be prepared to undertake safety induction.
WORK SAFETY NOTES: Students need to have started the OHS (WHS) unit from their VET in Schools course of study at a minimum. Students must follow all worksite OHS instructions and wear correct PPE as appropriate.
