EMPLOYER DESCRIPTION:  This employer is a local garden nursery who is keen to host students who are interested in working in the nursery/garden industry. They stock a wide variety of plants and trees, garden supply materials (landscaping materials, rocks, soils etc) and garden accessories and pots. If you are passionate about nursery work or plants, this employer would be happy to teach you more.

Prefer student to be undertaking VETiS in Horticulture

ATTENDANCE DETAILS:  One week blocks OR one day a week EXCEPT a FRIDAY.  Available anytime of the year.

TASK & DUTIES:  The student will be learning all aspects of horticulture and the retail nursery industry. Duties may involve; identification of trees, plants & shrubs, cleaning of the worksite, customer service, moving of plants and general labouring duties.

REQUIREMENTS:  The student must have an interest in horticulture and be willing to work in a retail environment with customers.

SKILLS ATTAINED:  The student will gain an understanding of working within a retail nursery environment. Students can expect to attain skills in workplace safety, recognition of plants, trees, soil types and pests, watering practices, dealing with customers and working in a small team.

DRESS REQUIREMENTS:  Students must wear neat work clothes, including enclosed shoes.

FIRST DAY INSTRUCTIONS:  Student needs to arrive early, ask for the manager, and be prepared to undertake safety induction.

WORK SAFETY NOTES:  Students need to have started the OHS (WHS) unit from their VET in Schools course of study at a minimum. Students must follow all worksite OHS instructions and wear correct PPE as appropriate.
